Well it’s snowed the last 5 days straight (eye roll emoji) and I’m definitely ready for some spring weather. I have a feeling we will be getting a bit more of harsh winter weather before it starts to warm up though sadly. So for those of you who, like me here in Jersey, don’t live in the year-round sunny climates, I wanted to share my lip care essentials that help me survive the harsh winter weather. It seems like as soon as winter starts every year, my lips are the first thing to feel it, and if I don’t take care of them daily (literally) they are a hot mess of chapping, cracking, peeling, and that lovely dry white outline…yeah, all that fun stuff. And chapstick alone just doesn’t cut it at that point. For a long time I kind of muddled through just dealing with the ugliness and pain and masking it with chapstick, but I feel like I have finally found the right combo to care for my kisser!

First of all, HYDRATE! I’m terrible at this. I can have 10 water bottles in my car at a time and still be dehydrated because I just forget to drink water throughout the day. I’ve started to make a conscious effort to start drinking water as soon as I get up and try and finish a bottle while I’m getting ready for work or the gym etc. or at least in the car on my way to where I’m headed first thing. I also make sure I drink a full bottle at night before going to bed (reaches for water bottle). Then throughout the day it’s just reminding myself and having the bottle visibly in sight at my desk at work. It’s amazing once you really put it into practice though how your skin and lips have so much more life!
But since just hydrating isn’t enough to fight how brutal winter can be on the lips, after A LOT of trying different products, I’ve settled on the 3 picks below that really work for combatting winter pout probs.

- Tarte Cosmetics Pout Prep Lip Exfoliant – This one is great for if you already are dealing with some dryness or flakiness on your lips. Made with maracuja, shea butter, and sugar, it gently exfoliates and hydrates a bit at the same time. When I first got it, there weren’t instructions on the box so I thought you kind of used it like an exfoliating face wash and I scrubbed it on my lips and washed it off. That did not work lol. It left my lips a hot mess. Actually from reading the tarte website, they say you should do that and wipe off with a damp washcloth. So feel free to try it and maybe that will work for you, but turns out, if you just leave it on and slowly let the sugar granules work their magic, it leaves your lips super smooth and refreshed! Obviously if you do this, I recommend you do it at home before you head to work or anywhere public as you have to give the granules time to work so you don’t have big chunks of sugar on your lips like you just ate a real good donut and were saving some for later lol. Another bonus of this product is that it’s super budget friendly and the tiny container will last you through the whole winter!
- LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask – What I love about this is that you put it on at night and then just go to sleep. Nice and easy, once a day, and you don’t have to worry about reapplying after eating or drinking or anything and it literally works WONDERS! Gotta shout out Sephora on this one because I got this as a free sample with my Rouge Beauty Insider points and it was a life changer. Packed with tons of vitamins and minerals plus hyaluronic acid, and without parabens and sulfates and all that other bad stuff, this is a miracle in a jar. And for an added bonus, it has this great fruity smell and taste!
- Carmex Classic Lip Balm – Just like the name says, this one is a classic. I have used Carmex ever since I was a little kid because it’s what my mom used, and truly, no other balm or form of chapstick works for me…and I’ve tried them all! This is the best barrier or “mask” if you will to protect your lips from the harsh cold, wind, and dryness of winter without making your lips need reapplying over and over again like most other balms do. It also has SPF 15 which as we all know is super important for anti-aging and so much more. I love when a product does double duty for me! I go for the original stick, but it also comes in a tube or jar, and if you want to get real fancy you can get the cherry flavor!
So there you have it, my essentials for surviving winter until I can retire somewhere eternally sunny lol! Give them a try and let me know what’s working for you in the comments below!
